John Shoemaker: Song Samples

Sunshine Don't Follow

(John Shoemaker)
I forgot about this song a year or so after I wrote it, only a few years later to be reminded of it by a friend to whom I had sent a primitive version of it to. Good thing she liked it and kept it around. It is a song that is a spiritual call to action born from my own determination to improve myself and also to inspire others. At one point I wondered if it might be a bit trite, but now I hear it and appreciate it for the rawness of its honesty and the purity of its opinion, and there is nothing trite about either of those things.

Lyrics:

Purify, communicate, love in spite of all the hate
Seek the truth despite the price, we know what happened to Jesus Christ
Make a change, participate, and have hope it’s not too late
But don’t you follow them down, don’t follow them down, don’t follow them down – I won’t (repeat)

Chorus:
Sunshine, can’t you see
We could fly if we live free
Sunshine, can’t you see
We could fly if we live free

There’s beauty in the bones that walk this earth
Great potential looms with every birth
You gotta find your soul to open your eyes
There’s more at stake than you realize
But if we take stand and break the ice
We could still create a paradise
But don’t’ you follow them down, don’t follow them down, don’t follow them down – I won’t (repeat)

(Repeat chorus to end)
