Planet Earth
(John Shoemaker)
I have a deep concern for our world. I look at how we have become dependent upon world commerce, which is dependent upon cheap energy for easy world travelling, and then consider that a simple disruption in supply of ONE material, in the most obvious case OIL, could upset the entire socio-economic balance that we have created. I see this type of social construction as being so utterly flawed that it bewilders me we have not begun an emergency movement that calls on all world citizens to help redesign a more realistic, just, and sustainable system of operating our civilization. After many years of examination, I have concluded that the reason we as a society have not acted is because we have simply allowed greed to rule the world. Now is the time that true leaders with integrity, with the common good in mind, must step forword and lead us in a new direction, away from war and exploitation, and into a new era for humankind. This is no longer simply a matter of idealism, rather it is an essential part of the future foundation upon which our society can build hope for the survival of future generations.
Lyrics:
A world in war is a world insane
An old wound, still sore, is reopened again
It starts at home with you and me
No one can make it alone – where’s the community
There’s too many heartfelt words that are never spoke
There’s too much love denied and concealed
How funny what we say’s not wrong just don’t match the way we feel
It’s a wonder we get along at all – if we keep leaning back, we’ll fall
Chorus:
Four billion years from planet earth
A tiny opal of life in the Universe
We shed a lot of tears since the day of our birth
For all the fears holding us back on planet earth
Take a weak and fragile society, give it a primitive greed-based economy
Then materialistically infest the land – that’s the crumbling foundation on which we stand
And it starts at home with you and me
No one can make it alone – it takes a community
Everybody says they want peace, happiness and harmony
But I see people living in fear, delusion and misery
It comes down to the choices we make
Are we gonna give back or take
(Repeat chorus to end)
